College Writing

 Writing proficiency is essential for success in college, as students must communicate ideas clearly across a variety of assignments and disciplines. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 24% of first-time, full-time undergraduate students at four-year institutions do not return for their sophomore year, with many citing academic challenges, including difficulties in writing, as a contributing factor. Developing strong writing skills early on can help freshmen manage coursework demands, avoid academic probation, and ultimately persist toward graduation.

Tutoring plays a crucial role in supporting high school and college students as they develop essential writing skills for academic and professional success. With personalized guidance, students receive targeted feedback on organization, clarity, grammar, and argument structure, allowing them to refine their writing and express ideas more effectively. In addition, tutoring helps students gain confidence in their abilities, overcome common writing challenges, and adapt to different types of assignments, from essays to research papers. This individualized support ensures that students are well-prepared to communicate thoughtfully and persuasively in both their studies and future careers.

With more than 20 years of experience as a college writing instructor and a Master’s degree in writing, I bring a deep understanding of effective writing instruction to my teaching practice. In addition to my teaching background, I have edited more than 100 books and am the author of six, experiences that have deepened my insight into the craft of writing. My expertise allows me to guide students in developing clear arguments, mastering grammar and organization, researching and using documentation, and refining their writing style. This foundation enables me to provide tailored support, empowering students to become confident, skilled communicators in academic and professional settings.
